>Have you ever been on the receiving end of what sounds like a compliment
But the words that follow make you unsure because they seem to circumvent
Statements like “I love your outfit but I would’ve rocked it like this”
Unsure if you should say thank you cause you almost feel like you’ve been dissed
Or have you heard “For you to be so dark you’re also very pretty”
It almost leaves you feeling like they must think dark people look gritty
Or I like your hair but you should’ve done it like that
Well where was the compliment to really be exact
Or I’m proud of you for graduating although it took you this long
Wondering if they realize that the end of that statement was just wrong
It’s almost like we can’t compliment each other without giving some sort of dig
Like the negative words around the compliment will somehow be hid
We should learn that a compliment is a statement that should not contain “But”
The words around praise and adoration should stay as such
A compliment should make the person receiving it leave you with a smile
Not leave them wondering how they should’ve taken your words all the while
