How I Choose Hotels: Curating Love, Water Views, and Experiences We Still Talk About

My partner and I usually take about four trips a year, and when we travel, the hotel is never just a place to sleep.

For us, the hotel is part of the experience. It sets the tone. It holds the mood. It becomes part of the memory.

I am more of a stay-in-the-city type of traveler. I love the movement, the lights, the architecture, the restaurants, the energy, and the feeling of being in the middle of everything. My partner is more of a beach-view woman. She loves the peace, the softness, the ocean, and the way water reminds you to breathe.

But the thing we both agree on is water.

Whether it is an ocean view, harbor view, river view, or some beautiful body of water nearby, water has always been part of how we choose where to stay. It gives the trip a certain kind of spirit. It calms the body, opens the mind, and makes the whole experience feel more intentional.

We have a long list of places we want to visit, and honestly, we have only touched the surface. Every time we check one place off, three more seem to call our name. But when it is my turn to choose, I do not just pick a hotel because it looks nice. I think about the experience I want us to have.

I ask myself: What do I want us to feel here? What do I want us to remember? What kind of atmosphere will help us rest, reconnect, explore, and grow?

Then the research begins.

I look up hotels in the area. I search for spas, restaurants, water views, boat rides, neighborhoods, and experiences we have not done before. I watch tons of YouTube videos about the best hotels and things to do because I want to see the energy of a place before we get there. A picture can show you a room, but a video can show you a vibe.

And we love a good spa.

Not just any spa, either. We love the kind of spa that feels like a portal. Salt rooms, saunas, cold plunges, light therapy, steam rooms, different types of massages, quiet spaces, healing spaces, places where the body can exhale what the mind has been carrying.

Spa days have become one of our traditions. So have boat rides. We have done boat rides in at least six different cities, and each one gave us a different view of the place we were visiting. There is something about seeing a city from the water that changes your relationship with it. You see the skyline differently. You see the rhythm differently. You see yourself differently.

Because for us, travel is not just about going somewhere.
It is about creating something together.

My partner and I were in a long-distance relationship for ten years before I moved closer to her. So for many years, our trips were not just vacations. They were our way of meeting each other in the middle of life. When we could, we would fly together. When we could not, we made the most out of the time we had.

One of our staples has always been date night, usually dinner and a movie. No matter where we are, we find a way to do something familiar in an unfamiliar place.

One time, we were in New York and went to Times Square. We decided to go to the movies and ended up seeing Sandy Wexler. The movie theater itself became part of the experience because it was so New York. Eleven floors. Escalators everywhere. Different theaters on different levels. It was not just a movie night. It was a memory wrapped in lights, movement, and city magic.

Those are the moments I look for when I choose hotels and plan trips.

Yes, I care about luxury. Yes, I love a beautiful room, a good view, great service, spacious bathrooms, delicious food, and a lobby that makes you want to sit there for hours. But beneath all of that, I am really curating memories.

Carefully. Lovingly. Intentionally.

I want our trips to give us more than pictures. I want them to give us stories. I want them to stretch us spiritually, mentally, and physically. I want us to rest, laugh, discover, heal, taste something new, see something differently, and return home with another layer added to who we are.

That is what this hotel blog category is really about.

It is about how we choose places that feel aligned with the experience we want to have. It is about the hotels, the spas, the city views, the ocean views, the harbor lights, the boat rides, the date nights, the traditions, and the unexpected moments that become sacred in their own way.

Because travel, when done with intention, is not just movement.

It is love in motion.

And every hotel we choose becomes part of the story.
