Don’t Forget to Stand Out

“Today, be mindful to stand out.”

Sometimes it may be difficult to stand out because of the light that shines on us. Sometimes that light shines so bright that it shows our flaws, imperfections, mistakes, and our failures. This can make it hard to stand up in our truth because of how feel about those things. When we begin to understand that sometimes our lives are the lessons for others to see we can understand the light and therefore not be afraid of it. #letyourlightshine

20 Year Anniversary In the D

This month marks my twenty year anniversary living in “The D”. I remember 20 years ago when I moved here in July we were still wearing jackets and I thought “Will they ever have a summer?” Two days after I got here there were 13 tornadoes that hit Detroit some near the 8-mile area where I was two miles away from and across the northwest area of Detroit. I remember the people that I had met during this time asking me if I had brought this weather with me. Storms I was used to being from Florida, but not the cool weather that came with it. Detroit was a bit of a culture shock for me. I had moved from Fort Myers, Florida to Chicago, and then moved here to Detroit where the African American population is predominate. I laugh now because I truly did not know what to think, I had a sea of emotions when I got here as well as learning how to drive in the mountainous snow that fell the following winter. When I look back on my 20 years here it has been an experience of true growth and evolution. Thank you Detroit for having me, keeping me, and loving me….it has been real!

Self Awareness- Carrying Past Hurts

Self-awareness begins with taking a deep, hard, long look at who you are from the inside out. It’s also about taking the time to know those things that have hurt you, shamed you, made you feel guilty, and understand the pain that you may still carry from those issues. When we don’t take the time to heal those past hurts we carry them as residuals to every place we go. Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt like you didn’t belong? Not because the people weren’t like you but because you felt some type of low self-esteem. Sometimes it’s because we haven’t cleared up those negative energies that won’t allow us to feel like we’re worthy of the blessings that we have entered into. When we feel unworthy we walk in with our heads hanging down, or with nervous energy, anxiety, or just plain ole’ doubt or fear. In order to build your confidence, take the time to go through your past hurts, pains, shames, fears, and doubts with a fine tooth comb. Recognize them for what they were, understand why they happened, how you feel about them and begin to work through them so that you can move past them. It is imperative to work on these issues to help you the individual, but to also have a life-long brand that your self esteem and character can keep. If you don’t, trust me it will continue to affect how you walk into ‘any’ room, especially the ones you’ve got clearance to be in.

Significance

Every time that I do an event, host a show, or anything important, when I get home or the next morning after prayers I go over it in my head. This morning was no different. Last night My co-producer and I had our first film screening for the Cast of The Out Loud In The D documentary and docu-series. After my prayers, I got to thinking about the screening and thought about how it was the same auditorium that I saw Terry McMillan in three years prior. I thought “Wow, how significant is that!” The Creator is so amazing to give us previews of our lives even before it happens. Who knew that three years after seeing Terry McMillan in the Clara J Stanton Auditorium that I would host my first film screening there.
