because of the pain
but it still aches

I can relate, I think it is that you become immune to certain levels of pain in a sense, that it makes it less painful, you still feel it. Because you have healed but your skin is tougher not dead
Yes Dale, I believe you are correct the skin is tougher. Some wounds are deeper even when there is no physical pain sometimes there are still remnants of emotional pain.
