Jon BradburyHello, my name is Jon Bradbury and I wrote the story Jump for the Forbidden Future Anthology.

Writing is not as easy as it sounds. Think about your life. Think about all the million and one distractions zipping through your busy little mind right now.

Drives you a little bit crazy, doesn’t it?

Now, imagine, just for a moment, having to dampen down all those distractions. To write. A story. A novel. A fictional story where everyone and everything isn’t real, doesn’t exist, or is used in a fictional manner.

Sounds hard, doesn’t it?

Writing a blog is hard enough. Writing a quick status update on Facebook or a tweet on Twitter is a little bit easier. But to write a book, a whole story, to quiet down all that mental chatter for just one moment, so you can concentrate, is nearly impossible.

So that is why writers need to have a place where they can drown out the rest of the world, if only for a little while, and write.

A private space, devoid of any distractions, helps. Listening to music helps me a lot. If I’m really having trouble focusing, a meditation recording of some kind helps even more.

If solitude is too much to ask for, a time of day when you can at least work without interruptions is the next step. Have a comfortable chair to sit it. Wear your favorite old t-shirt or sweats. Have the room as cool or as warm as you prefer.

While writing, JUST WRITE. Don’t answer emails, and for Pete’s sake, DON’T go on any of the social media sites. Don’t tell yourself, “Oh, just a few minutes won’t hurt.”

You know as well as I do that “a few minutes” will turn into an hour and before you know it, you’ve wasted all that time you should have spent writing.

Don’t pay bills, don’t shop, just write. I know, sometimes it’s difficult to concentrate, but you’re here to write.

Having an operational computer helps, one that is at least free of malfunctions of hardware malfunctions or software glitches, regardless of make, model and installed software. Doesn’t matter if its the latest and greatest or if it’s on its last microchip, a computer is essential to writing in the digital age, as is reliable internet access.

Yep, writing is so easy.

Think about that next time you decide to post a one star review or post how much you think an author sucks.
